PRESIDENTS WHO OWNED PEOPLE

Given the recent remembrances of the beginning of the Civil War and the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, let us, shall we, take a look at our Presidents who owned people - our Slave Owning Presidents [and it's quite a longer list than one might imagine]:

GEORGE WASHINGTON - YES - and owned slaves while president

JOHN ADAMS - NO

THOMAS JEFFERSON - YES - and also owned slaves while president

JAMES MADISON - YES - and also owned slaves as president

JAMES MONROE - YES - and while president; it's getting redundant

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS - NO (seeing a pattern here?)

ANDREW JACKSON - YES - and owned slaves as president

MARTIN VAN BUREN - YES - but did not own slaves as president

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON - YES - but not as president

JOHN TYLER - YES - and while he was president

JAMES K. POLK - YES - and he owned slaves as president

ZACHARY TAYLOR - YES - and he owned slaves as president, the last to do

MILLARD FILLMORE - NO

FRANKLIN PIERCE - NO

JAMES BUCHANAN - PROBABLY - he had "indentured servants"

ABRAHAM LINCOLN - NO

ANDREW JOHNSON - YES - but not while president

ULYSSES S. GRANT - YES - but not when president
